Greek Pizza

Greek pizza is a delightful twist on traditional pizza, incorporating the fresh, vibrant flavors of Mediterranean cuisine. Known for its thicker, soft crust and a generous array of toppings, Greek pizza is a feast for both the eyes and the taste buds. What sets it apart is the use of ingredients that are staples in Greek cooking, such as feta cheese, olives, tomatoes, and fresh herbs.

The crust of a Greek pizza is typically thicker and softer than other styles, providing a hearty base for the toppings. The pizza is often brushed with olive oil and sometimes sprinkled with garlic and herbs before the toppings are added. The toppings include crumbled feta cheese, which adds a tangy and creamy texture, along with kalamata olives for a briny kick. Fresh vegetables like red onions, tomatoes, and spinach add a burst of color and freshness. A sprinkle of oregano and a drizzle of olive oil finish off this delicious creation.

Greek pizza is a perfect representation of the Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes fresh vegetables, healthy fats, and bold flavors. It's a great option for those looking for a healthier pizza alternative without compromising on taste. Whether enjoyed as a main dish or a party snack, Greek pizza is sure to impress.

Recipe: Greek Pizza

Ingredients:

For the dough:

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

For the toppings:

  • 1/4 cup olive oil

  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Fresh oregano leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Dough:

    • In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar and yeast in warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
    • In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.
    • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
    • Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, until doubled in size.
  2. Preheat the Oven:

    • Preheat the oven to 475°F (245°C). If using a pizza stone, place it in the oven to heat.
  3. Shape the Dough:

    • Punch down the risen dough and transfer it to a floured surface. Roll it out into a circle or rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick.
    • Place the dough on a piece of parchment paper or a pizza peel if using a stone.
  4. Assemble the Pizza:

    • Brush the dough with olive oil and sprinkle with minced garlic.
    • Evenly distribute the crumbled feta and shredded mozzarella cheese over the dough.
    • Add the sliced kalamata olives, red onions, cherry tomatoes, and spinach leaves.
    • Sprinkle dried oregano and freshly ground black pepper over the toppings.
  5. Bake the Pizza:

    • Transfer the pizza to the oven (onto the stone if using) and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  6. Serve:

    • Remove the pizza from the oven and let it cool slightly. Garnish with fresh oregano leaves if desired.
    • Slice and serve hot.
