Pizza Recipies and Cooking Method
New York-Style Pizza
New York-Style pizza, a beloved staple of the Big Apple, is renowned for its large, foldable slices and crispy outer crust. This iconic pizza style emerged in the early 20th century, drawing inspiration from the traditional Neapolitan pizza brought over by Italian immigrants. Over time, it has evolved into a unique and recognizable form, adored by locals and visitors alike.
The key to New York-Style pizza's distinctiveness lies in its crust. Thin and crisp around the edges, yet soft and pliable enough to fold, the crust provides the perfect base for the toppings. Typically, this pizza is generously covered with a tangy tomato sauce, seasoned with herbs and spices, and then topped with a layer of gooey, melted mozzarella cheese. The simplicity of the ingredients allows the quality and texture of the dough to shine through.
Baked in large, gas-fired ovens at high temperatures, New York-Style pizza achieves a delightful balance between a crunchy exterior and a tender, chewy interior. This pizza is often sold by the slice, making it a convenient and satisfying meal on the go. Whether enjoyed plain or with an array of toppings like pepperoni, mushrooms, or sausage, New York-Style pizza remains a timeless favorite, epitomizing the essence of classic American comfort food.
Recipe: New York-Style Pizza
Ingredients:
- 4 cups (500g) bread flour
- 1 ½ cups (350ml) warm water
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 can (28oz) crushed tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 cups (200g) shredded mozzarella cheese
- Optional: pepperoni, mushrooms, sausage, or any preferred toppings
Instructions:
- In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar and yeast in warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
- In a large bowl, combine the bread flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil.
- Mix until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise for 1-2 hours, until doubled in size.
- In a saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant.
- Add the crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Set aside to cool.
- If using a pizza stone, place it in the oven and preheat to 500°F (260°C). Allow the stone to heat for at least 30 minutes.
- Punch down the risen dough and divide it into two equal portions.
- On a lightly floured surface, stretch each portion into a large, thin circle (about 14 inches in diameter). Avoid using a rolling pin to maintain the dough's airiness.
- Spread a thin layer of the tomato sauce over each dough round.
- Sprinkle an even layer of shredded mozzarella cheese on top.
- Add any additional toppings as desired.
- Transfer the pizza to the preheated stone or a baking sheet.
- Bake for 10-15 minutes, until the crust is golden and crispy, and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Remove the pizza from the oven, let it cool slightly, then slice and serve hot.
Enjoy your homemade New York-Style pizza, savoring each delicious, foldable slice!
