The Sweet and Savory Delight of Hawaiian Pizza
Hawaiian pizza is a unique and polarizing favorite that brings together the sweet and savory flavors of ham and pineapple. This pizza style is a delightful twist on traditional toppings, offering a refreshing combination that has won over many pizza enthusiasts. The interplay of salty ham and sweet pineapple creates a flavor profile that is both intriguing and satisfying, while the optional addition of bacon adds an extra layer of smokiness and richness.
Originating in Canada in the 1960s, Hawaiian pizza was created by Sam Panopoulos, who wanted to experiment with new and unconventional toppings. Despite its name, it has no direct ties to Hawaii but is named after the brand of canned pineapple used in the original recipe. This pizza has since gained a global following, loved for its bold and contrasting tastes.
Hawaiian pizza is perfect for those who enjoy exploring different flavor combinations. Whether you are a fan of the sweet and savory mix or looking to try something new, this pizza offers a delightful and memorable culinary experience. Enjoy it with a light, crisp salad or a refreshing beverage for a balanced and enjoyable meal.

- 1 cup pineapple chunks (fresh or canned, drained)
- 1/2 cup cooked bacon pieces (optional)
- Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar and yeast in warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, until doubled in size.

- Add the crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Set aside to cool.

- Punch down the risen dough and transfer it to a floured surface. Roll it out into a thin circle or rectangle.
- Place the dough on a piece of parchment paper or a pizza peel if using a stone.
- Spread a thin layer of tomato sauce over the dough.
- Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the sauce.
- Distribute the diced ham, pineapple chunks, and bacon pieces (if using) over the cheese.
- Transfer the pizza to the oven (onto the stone if using) and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the crust is crispy and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
